Regional grid operator modernizes remote substations

Secure remote access and protocol translation helped a utility reduce truck rolls across substations spread over rural terrain.

Challenge

Substations used different generations of protection relays and meters. Field teams were losing time moving between sites for routine checks that rarely required physical intervention.

Modibus approach

Modibus devices were deployed as a controlled access layer. Relay data was translated into a common structure and published to operations systems while VPN access remained outbound-only.

Outcome

Operators gained a consistent view of breaker status, meter values and communication health. Site visits shifted from routine inspection to planned maintenance.

The biggest change was confidence. Dispatchers could see whether a problem was electrical, network-related or simply a stale device before sending a crew.
